Eco-kapitalism, även känt som grönt kapitalism, är en politisk ideologi som kombinerar element från kapitalism och miljövård. Den bygger på tron att marknadskrafter, om de rättleds och regleras på rätt sätt, kan användas för att bekämpa miljöförstöring och främja hållbar utveckling. Denna ideologi uppstod under slutet av 1900-talet som ett svar på växande oro över miljöpåverkan från ekonomiska aktiviteter.
Rötterna till ekokapitalism kan spåras tillbaka till 1960- och 1970-talet, när miljöfrågor började få större uppmärksamhet i den offentliga diskursen. Publiceringen av Rachel Carsons "Tyst vår" år 1962, som belyste de skadliga effekterna av bekämpningsmedel, brukar ofta nämnas som ett avgörande ögonblick i framväxten av miljömedvetenhet. Det var dock inte förrän på 1980- och 1990-talet som idén om att kombinera kapitalism och miljömedvetenhet började ta form.
Konceptet ekokapitalism utvecklades ytterligare på 1990-talet, med publiceringen av böcker som "Natural Capitalism: The Next Industrial Revolution" av Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins och L. Hunter Lovins. Dessa författare argumenterade för att företag kunde tjäna på att vara miljövänliga genom att minska avfall, förbättra effektiviteten och utveckla nya teknologier.
Eco-kapitalism vann ytterligare mark under början av 2000-talet, när effekterna av klimatförändringarna blev alltmer uppenbara. Många företag och regeringar började anta eco-kapitalistiska principer, investera i förnybar energi, främja hållbar jordbruk och genomföra politik för att minska koldioxidutsläppen. Parisavtalet från 2015, som ålade länder att begränsa den globala uppvärmningen till väl under 2 grader Celsius, kan ses som en manifestation av eco-kapitalistiska principer på global nivå.
Emellertid har ekokapitalism också kritiserats av vissa miljöaktivister, som hävdar att den inte går tillräckligt långt i att ta itu med de grundläggande orsakerna till miljöförstöring. De hävdar att kapitalismen, genom sin natur, främjar oändlig tillväxt och konsumtion, vilket är oförenligt med miljömässig hållbarhet. Trots dessa kritiker förblir ekokapitalism en betydande och inflytelserik ideologi i den pågående debatten om hur man ska hantera miljöutmaningar.
